A free pay stub generator vs. a blank template
A free pay stub template gives you the layout; every number on it is still yours to work out. The generator does the payroll math for you. If a template is what you're after, there are free Excel, Word and PDF pay stub templates to download.
| What | Blank template | Paystub Form generator |
|---|---|---|
| Federal income tax | You work it out from IRS Publication 15-T | Calculated with the 2026 percentage method |
| Social Security and Medicare | You apply 6.2% and 1.45% and track the wage cap | Calculated, including the $184,500 Social Security cap |
| State income tax | You look up your state's withholding formula | Calculated for all 50 states and DC |
| Year-to-date totals | Added up by hand for every pay date | Carried forward automatically |
| Several pay dates | One document at a time | Created together in one go |
Pay stub rules where you work
What a pay stub has to show, and which state taxes come out of it, depends on the state. Each state page lists the rules and payroll taxes from official sources — for example California, Texas, New York and Florida. See pay stub requirements for every state.

Common questions
Is the pay stub really free?
Yes. Your first pay stub is free and downloads without a watermark. No credit card is needed — you only confirm your email address.
What's the catch?
The free offer covers one pay stub per person (per email address and per browser). If you create several pay dates at once, the first one is free and clean; the others download as watermarked previews until paid downloads open.
Why do you need my email?
We send the download link to it. Confirming the address is how we keep the offer to one free stub per person without asking for a card.
Are the tax calculations accurate?
Withholding uses the IRS percentage method from Publication 15-T for 2026, current Social Security and Medicare rates, and each state's own withholding formula. You can check the numbers first with our free paycheck calculator.
Can I make a free pay stub as a contractor or self-employed person?
Yes. Choose Contractor instead of Employee in the builder. A contractor's pay stub shows what was paid without withholding federal or state income tax, Social Security or Medicare, because a 1099 contractor pays those through estimated taxes instead.
Can I use the pay stub as proof of income?
A pay stub records pay that was actually earned. Only enter real wages and deductions — creating a document with false figures to mislead a lender, landlord or agency is fraud.
