How it works

How the hourly paycheck calculator works

It runs your hours through the same tax engine as our pay stub generator, so the figures match what a stub for the same pay would show.

Gross pay

Regular hours × your hourly rate, plus overtime hours × the overtime rate — time and a half or double time. Not sure how many overtime hours you have? The overtime calculatorsplits a week's hours for you.

Federal taxes

Income tax is withheld with the IRS percentage method in Publication 15-T for 2026, assuming a 2020-or-later W-4 with no adjustments. Social Security is 6.2% and Medicare 1.45%.

State income tax

Each state's own withholding formula. For take-home examples and rates in one state, see the paycheck calculator by state.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I calculate my paycheck from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the regular hours in the pay period, add overtime hours at the overtime rate, and you have gross pay. Then take off federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) and your state's income tax. The calculator does each step and shows every line.

How many hours are in a pay period?

A full-time year is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). That is 40 hours for a weekly pay period, 80 for every two weeks, about 86.67 for twice a month and about 173.33 for monthly. Type the hours you actually worked — an hourly paycheck is based on those, not on the average.

Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?

No. Overtime is ordinary wages and is taxed the same way. More may be withheld from a paycheck with overtime because withholding is figured on the total pay for the period, and a larger check reaches higher brackets. For 2025 through 2028 there is also a federal deduction for the overtime premium, claimed on your tax return.

What taxes does the hourly paycheck calculator include?

Federal income tax withholding, Social Security (6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base for 2026), Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000) and your state's income tax withholding. It leaves out state disability and paid-leave contributions, local taxes, and deductions such as health insurance and 401(k).

Can I turn the result into a pay stub?

Yes. The button under the result opens the pay stub generator with your state, hourly rate, pay frequency and filing status filled in. Overtime is added there as its own earnings line, and your first pay stub is free.
