How it works

How the conversion works

One number connects an hourly wage and a salary: the hours you are paid for in a year.

Hours in a year

Hours per week × weeks per year. At 40 hours and 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, the usual full-time year.

Hourly to salary

Hourly wage × hours in a year. Dividing the yearly figure by 12, 24, 26 or 52 gives monthly, twice-a-month, every-two-weeks and weekly pay.

Salary to hourly

Yearly salary ÷ hours in a year. All of it is before taxes — the paycheck calculator takes the taxes off.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly wage by the hours you work in a week, then by the weeks you work in a year. Full time is usually 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours worked in a year. At full time that is 2,080 hours, so a $60,000 salary is $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.

Why 2,080 hours?

It is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, the standard full-time year. Paid holidays and paid vacation are still paid hours, so they stay in the 2,080. Only unpaid time off lowers the number.

What if I work part time or take unpaid weeks off?

Change the hours per week or the weeks per year. Someone working 30 hours a week at $20 an hour earns $20 × 30 × 52 = $31,200. A seasonal worker paid for 40 weeks would use 40 instead of 52.

Are these figures before or after taxes?

Before. The conversion shows gross pay only. To see what is left after federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare, put the result into the paycheck calculator.
