Questions
1099 form FAQ
What is the difference between a 1099-NEC and a 1099-MISC?
Form 1099-NEC reports pay for services by someone who isn't your employee, such as a freelancer or independent contractor. Form 1099-MISC reports other business payments: rents, royalties, prizes and awards, medical payments, attorney proceeds and similar income.
How do I generate a 1099 form online?
Pick the 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC builder, enter your business as the payer, then the recipient's name, TIN and address and the amounts you paid. Review the filled-in IRS form, edit any box, and download the PDF.
How do I fill out a 1099 form?
Put your business in the payer boxes and the person you paid in the recipient boxes, using the TIN from their Form W-9. Enter the year's total in the right box (box 1a on the 1099-NEC for contractor pay), add any federal or state tax you withheld, and leave boxes that don't apply empty.
When do I have to issue a 1099-NEC?
When you pay someone who isn't your employee for services in the course of your business. For payments made in 2026 the reporting threshold is $2,000 for the year (it was $600 before). Payments to most corporations don't need one.
What are the new boxes on the 2026 forms?
The December 2026 revisions add boxes for cash tips with a Treasury Tipped Occupation Code (TTOC) and for overtime compensation: boxes 1b, 1c and 1d on the 1099-NEC and boxes 13a, 13b and 14 on the 1099-MISC. They let recipients claim the new deductions for qualified tips and overtime.
Is this the same as the IRS fillable 1099 form?
Yes. The PDF is the official IRS Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC (Rev. December 2026) with your entries printed in the boxes, so it looks exactly like the IRS fillable form — without having to line up the fields yourself.
Can I print Copy A and mail it to the IRS?
No. The IRS only accepts its own scannable red-ink Copy A on paper and says not to file a printed copy from a PDF. File the IRS copy online for free through the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) — required if you file 10 or more information returns — or order official forms from the IRS.
When are 1099s due?
Copy B of the 1099-NEC goes to the recipient and the IRS copy to the IRS by January 31. For the 1099-MISC, the recipient copy is due January 31 (February 15 if box 8 or 10 is filled) and the IRS copy by February 28 on paper or March 31 if you e-file.
How much does the 1099 generator cost?
Filling in the form and previewing it is free. Downloading the finished PDF costs $7.99 per form — no subscription.
Which tax years can I create?
Tax year 2026, on the December 2026 revision of the forms that the IRS uses for 2026 payments filed in early 2027.
What if I made a mistake on a 1099 I already sent?
Create a corrected form with the right amounts and give the recipient the new Copy B. If the IRS copy was already filed, file the correction through IRIS as well.
