2027 holidays that move payday
Direct deposits don't settle on days the Federal Reserve Banks are closed. When a holiday falls on a Saturday the banks stay open the Friday before, so payday doesn't move.

Pay period, pay date and the pay stub
A payroll calendar lists pay dates — the days money is paid. Each one covers a pay period that usually ended a few days to a week earlier, to leave time to count the hours. Both appear on every pay stub; the difference is explained in pay period vs. pay date.
The schedule also sets the size of each check. The same salary is split into 52, 26, 24 or 12 paychecks — compare them in weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly or monthly payroll, convert between them with the hourly to salary calculator, or see the take-home amount for your schedule in the paycheck calculator.
Running payroll yourself? The small business guide covers what an employer has to do, and the pay stub generator creates a stub for each of these pay dates in one go.
Common questions
How many pay periods are there in 2027?
Paid every two weeks, most employees have 26 paydays in 2027. Paid weekly, 52 — or 53 on a Friday schedule if the January 1 payday isn't moved into 2026. Twice a month is always 24 and monthly is always 12.
Does 2027 have 27 biweekly pay periods?
Only on one schedule, and usually not in practice. 2027 has 53 Fridays, so an every-other-Friday cycle that lands on January 1 has 27 scheduled paydays. But January 1 is a bank holiday, so that pay normally goes out on Thursday, December 31, 2026 — which leaves 26 paydays in 2027. The other Friday cycle, starting January 8, has 26.
What happens when payday falls on a weekend or holiday?
Most employers pay on the business day before, because direct deposits can't settle on weekends or on days the Federal Reserve Banks are closed. Some pay on the next business day instead; state law sets the latest a payday can be, so check your employer's policy.
What is the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?
Biweekly means every two weeks, on the same weekday — 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month on fixed dates, usually the 15th and the last day — 24 paychecks a year. For the same salary a semi-monthly paycheck is a little larger, because the year is split into fewer of them.
Does an extra pay period change my salary or taxes?
It doesn't change your annual salary unless your employer divides it by the usual 26 and pays that amount 27 times. Taxes follow the pay date: a paycheck is counted in the year it is paid, so pay moved from January 1 to December 31 belongs on the earlier year's W-2.
Which pay schedule is the most common?
Paying every two weeks is the most common schedule among U.S. private employers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, followed by weekly, then semi-monthly and monthly.
