State payroll taxes

What Tennessee does tax on a paycheck

Tennessee does not tax wages, so no state income tax is withheld from paychecks. (The state's former Hall tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed as of tax year 2021 and never applied to wages.)

Employers that pay semimonthly or more often must pay wages earned before the 1st by the 20th of that month, and wages earned before the 16th by the 5th of the next month.

Pay stubs

Does Tennessee require a pay stub?

No Tennessee statute requires most employers to give an itemized pay stub. Federal law still requires accurate payroll records, and landlords and lenders usually ask for recent stubs as proof of income.

Worth knowing

Tennessee's Hall tax is gone too

Tennessee never taxed wages, but it did tax interest and dividend income through the Hall income tax. That tax was phased down from 2017 and repealed for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2021, so Tennessee now has no tax on individual income at all.
